A student of mine is headed off to Kyoto for a holiday - lucky duck! A must-see in this ancient capital is Kira Karacho, a handmade paper printing studio almost 400 years old. As a university exchange student, I was taught there by the 12th generation during a two-week internship. Intricately carved blocks, beautiful Japanese washi paper and a unique way of applying the pigment and seashell mixture was fascinating. In addition to their printing studio, they also have a great gift shop in downtown Kyoto.
