50 Shades of Grey - and pink, yellow and blue!
My work is a bit more subtle than this book - but the Peony is sometimes known as a 'female' symbol...I've just finally finished this edition of 50 prints and it's now time for the flowers to grow by themselves. Just when I was feeling a bit weary, I peeped at the last page of one of my favourite printmaking books Japanese Woodblock Printing by Rebecca Salter. I felt really encouraged by what she had to say.
'One of the beauties, however, of Japanese prints as they age is the change in the colour of the paper. It develops a soft glow which seems to make the water-based colours even more vibrant as the colour has been forced right into the fibres of the paper by the baren. Over time, memories of the struggle with the technique will fade as the completed print appears to grow in depth and luminosity.'
For those in Singapore, you can see my Peranakan Peony series at the Hollandse Club from Friday June 5 until June 30. Contact me for details!
