Some behind-the-scenes shots of my Belgium Blossoms from my Trade Tile series! This print has seven blocks, each carved by hand using Japanese woodblock tools. I discovered this antique tile in a clan temple on Cantonment Road in Singapore. The Nine Dragon Hall temple was built from donations from the clan association members including from my great grandfather, Lim Nee Yam.
This romantic tile was originally made in Belgium, hence the title of the work. It's a reminder of the colonial era in Singapore, but it proves that a love of European design was strong amid some of the Chinese population too. Image the elders and young members of this very traditional group picking their favourite tiles...way back in 1928!
