MIND MAP III - HANDMADE ORIGINAL PRINT
The Mind Map series was inspired by my years of traveling between Singapore and Japan. The watery landscape, seen from above, reminds me of my personal connection with the region.
My family links to Singapore began when my great-great grandfather, Lim Hong Eok (born in 1855), left southern China with his two sons. They were full of hope and excitement for a prosperous life in Singapore. He worked in the maritime industry in the region; as did my grandfather, who became a goods warehouse clerk along the Singapore river; and my father, who was in the merchant navy. Having three generations work in the maritime industry, I regard the sea as a symbol of history and life.
I designed and carved multiple wooden blocks to create this artwork and used my signature Japanese woodblock printing technique. Watercolour pigments, handmade brushes and a bamboo baren to print on specialist Japanese washi paper, were also used in the process.
