Mind Map

Handmade Limited Edition Fine Art Print

MIND MAP III - HANDMADE ORIGINAL PRINT

The Mind Map series was inspired by my years of traveling between Singapore and Japan. The watery landscape seen from above reminds me of my personal connection to the region. With three generations of my family in Singapore having worked in the maritime industry, to me the sea is symbol of history and life.

My great-grandfather was one of three generations of my family in Singapore who worked in the maritime industry. My father was in a merchant navy and my grandfather was a clerk in a goods warehouse near the Singapore river.  The family connection to Singapore began when my great-great grandfather, Lim Hong Eok, (born in 1855) came out from southern China with his two sons. Their journey to Singapore must have been been full of great excitement and a burning desire to establish themselves.

This print was created using the Japanese woodblock printing technique. After multiple wooden blocks were designed and carved, I used watercolour pigments, handmade brushes and a bamboo baren to print on specialist Japanese washi paper.

japanese woodblock printing - the second block

See how I print the second of four hand-carved blocks behind the Mind Map print series. Japanese woodblock is the same printmaking method used to create the 'ukiyoe' genre of prints popular overseas with artists like Van Gogh!

PRINT PROCESS

Image creation, image transfer, carving the block, printing and editioning all go into creating an original handmade print.
